Hainan has undergone considerable development as a Special Economic Zone. It is a key tourist destination and has become a major contributor to the Chinese economy. The government of Hainan continues to build a strong infrastructure for tourism, one capable of sustained growth as Hainan builds its brand in the global tourism market. Historically Hainan has been an insignificant contributor to China’s GDP, but by the first quarter 2010 Hainan’s GDP increased 25.1% over the prior-year period, the highest provincial GDP increase in China.
